B.M.G. Index

B.M.G. (Banjo • Mandolin • Guitar) magazine (in its original incarnation) was published in the UK from 1903 until its demise in 1976; and it featured many full-page arrangements of music.

In addition, it included some notable and useful regular articles. For classical guitarists, these included:

• 56-10 to 66-01: Harmony for Guitarists by Jack Duarte
• 61-09 to 74-11: Guitar Technique by James O’Brien

You can find PDFs of all issues after 1924 (and many others issues, back to 1903) in this archive.

For my own purposes I have indexed much of the content.

So for those interested, I now give below an alphabetical index (by composer) to all the classical guitar music. I have standardised the spelling in some cases (e.g. Minuet for Menuett) to make searches easier, and added a few missing diacritics.

So that pieces from the same suite sort together, I have written the titles (where applicable) as “Parent Work: Movement”.

Misattributed composers are shown in parentheses after the actual composers.

Some pieces are labelled “fingerstyle or plectrum”. These are denoted by G (rather than CG) in the Instruments column (as is the one John Renbourn piece, which was of course originally for steel-strung guitar). It may be worth noting that pieces explicitly for the Spanish guitar are rare before WWII, and all but non-existent before 1929—at least in the issues that remain.

Sorting the pieces this way shows up several duplicates: they are marked as such in the comments.

The titles given for many of these pieces suffer from the endemic vagueness of those times. Thanks to the denizens of a) the International Classical Guitar Society on Facebook and b) DelCamp Classical Guitar, for providing missing catalogue numbers.
